4x4 crossing a rocky riverbed on the Kabouga trail

Kabouga & Bedrogfontein 4x4 trails

For the adventurous: the historic Bedrogfontein route winds straight through the Zuurberg section of the park, following old Anglo-Boer War tracks over river crossings, rocky climbs and fields of spekboom. A high-clearance 4x4 is essential, and worth it. We can help you plan the route, arrange permits and pack a picnic for the day.

The Zuurberg range forms the dramatic northern backdrop of the valley, and of our garden. Hike the day trails from the historic Zuurberg Mountain Village, explore the passes on horseback, or simply drive the old Zuurberg Pass at sunset for views that stretch all the way to the Karoo.

Kirkwood, citrus country and the Wildsfees

The lodge sits just outside Kirkwood (now Nqweba), a friendly farming town in the heart of one of South Africa's most important citrus regions. During harvest season, from April to September, tractors piled high with oranges are a familiar sight on the roads into town. Every year in late June the town hosts the SPAR Kirkwood Wildsfees, one of the country's biggest wildlife festivals, with game auctions, live music and family entertainment. History lovers can take the gravel road to Enon, a Moravian mission village founded in 1818, where services are still held in the original little church.
